Balaklava Odyssey 2010
The second edition of the media and performance art festival Balaklava Odyssey will take place from August 12-15 at the Mikhailov fortress in Sevastopol (Crimea, Ukraine).
|
Who?
Artists from the Ukraine, Russia, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Great Britain, France and USA will present video installations, animations, performance, experimental music and dance in the yards, cellars and catacombs of the Mikailov fortress as well as in the submarine bunker in Balaklava.
|
|
Where?
As a pilot project, Balaklava Odyssey is first to realise an artistic use of the Mikhailov fortress, which was in active use by the Ukrainian military until 2009. The festival is thereby continuing its engagement with historically meaningful places in the Crimea, which begun in 2006 as well as attempting a cultural revitalisation of former military facilities.

Mikhailov fortress
Build in the 30s of the 19th century, this architecturally unique site played a crucial role in the Crimean war – Tolstoi mentioned it in his Sevastopol Stories. The fortress was one of the few buildings to survive the complete destruction of Sevastopol during World War II largely undamaged and is run by the Ukrainian national military museum.
